Season 2 is the shortest and the most direct of the seasons. Eight episodes, two maps, and a straight line from the end of Scarlet’s War into the first expansion.

The eight episodes

Gates of Maguuma opens it and adds the only new maps of the season: Dry Top and the Silverwastes. Everything after it is instanced story.

Then Entanglement, The Dragon’s Reach in two parts, Echoes of the Past, Tangled Paths, Seeds of Truth, and Point of No Return.

That structure is worth knowing before you start, because it is the opposite of Season 3, where every episode handed you a map. Season 2 is a story season. If you are looking for places to farm, this is not the one.

What it is doing

The first episode answers the question Season 1 left open: Scarlet was following ley lines, and what she woke up was Mordremoth.

From there the season is a slow build. Vines spread along the ley lines. The world’s leaders meet to agree on something and are attacked before they manage it. The Priory archives turn up Glint’s egg, which becomes the object everything revolves around for the next two expansions.

And then the season does the thing it is remembered for.

🔴 Memory seeds reveal that the sylvari were created as Mordremoth’s minions. Caithe knew, and killed someone to keep it quiet. The Pact launches its assault anyway, loses catastrophically, and the expansion opens with an entire race under suspicion and Rytlock convinced that none of them can be trusted.

Why not to skip it

You can. Nothing blocks Heart of Thorns.

But this season is where the expansion’s central emotional problem is constructed, and it is constructed carefully across eight episodes. Heart of Thorns is about walking into a jungle grown by a dragon, alongside people who are not sure whether the sylvari next to them is going to turn.

Skip Season 2 and that is a plot fact you were told. Play it and it is something you watched happen to characters you had spent eight episodes with.

It is the shortest season in the game and the cheapest bridge between two of its largest pieces. If you are working through the release order and looking for somewhere to save time, save it somewhere else.
