For three weeks around the turn of the year, Divinity’s Reach fills with snow and the game becomes almost aggressively generous. Portals from the other capitals drop you straight into it, so there is nothing to find and nowhere to travel.

The 2025 run went from 9 December to 6 January. The dates move by a few days each year.

The four activities

Winter Wonderland is the jumping puzzle, and the one people mean when they say Wintersday is harder than it looks. Three paths, exploding presents, melting snowflakes under your feet, on a clock.

Snowball Mayhem is capture-the-flag with snowballs, and you pick a role: supporter, heavy gunner or scout. It is the only PvP many players do all year.

Toypocalypse is tower defence. You protect gift dolyaks from toys that have stopped taking instructions, and it is the most cooperative thing in the festival.

Bell Choir Ensemble is a rhythm game. Several players play a song together on a set of bells, badly, and it pays karma and gifts for the attempt. Finishing it gives the Enchanted Music Box, which stays with your account forever and is one of the quietly beloved items in the game.

What you get

The currencies are Snowflakes and Snow Diamonds, spent at festival vendors. Karma pours in from everything, boosted by the usual modifiers.

The real engine is Wintersday Gifts, which drop from nearly every activity and open into more of the same. Wintergreen weapon skins and the festival minis come out of this loop, and the whole thing is designed so that a player doing whatever they enjoy ends up with the rewards anyway.

If you have three weeks and no plan

  1. Bell Choir first, for the Enchanted Music Box. It is permanent, it costs you one attempt, and you will still have it in five years.
  2. Toypocalypse and Snowball Mayhem whenever there are people queueing, which during the festival is most of the time.
  3. Winter Wonderland when you are in the mood to be beaten by a snowflake.
  4. Open gifts as they arrive rather than hoarding them, because the loop feeds itself.

The one festival that is about being together

Halloween is about being tested. Four Winds is about moving. Super Adventure Box is a private joke you climb inside.

Wintersday is the one that only works with other people in the room.

Bell Choir needs a group to sound like anything. Toypocalypse falls apart alone. Snowball Mayhem is a playground fight. Even the jumping puzzle, which you do solo, has a crowd of strangers failing next to you and cheering when somebody lands it.

It is not the most rewarding festival and it is not the most technically interesting. It arrives in the darkest weeks of the year, hands out presents to everybody equally, and asks nothing except that you show up. There is a reason people log in for it who have not played since October.

Questions people ask

When does Wintersday run?

Late December into early January. The 2025 edition ran 9 December to 6 January, and the dates shift slightly each year.

Where is Wintersday held?

Divinity's Reach, with portals from the other major cities. The whole festival is in one place rather than spread across maps.

What is the Wintersday currency?

Snowflakes and Snow Diamonds, spent at festival vendors. Most rewards arrive as Wintersday Gifts, which drop from nearly every activity.

What is the hardest part of Wintersday?

Winter Wonderland, the jumping puzzle. It is a timed run across melting snowflakes and exploding presents, and it defeats a lot of people every year.
