Fractals from zero: scales, agony and ascended gear

Five-player dungeons with a hundred difficulty scales. What the tiers mean, from which scale agony starts hurting, how much Agony Resistance you need, and what all of it is for.

Fractals are the best bridge between the open world and serious group content. They are short, a run fits into an evening, and they are how most players end up assembling their first ascended set. The early tiers you walk through; then agony starts biting, and that is when the gear finally makes sense.

The entrance is an asura gate in the centre of Fort Marriner in Lion’s Arch.

How the difficulty works

Parties are five, though smaller groups are allowed.

The difficulty scale runs 1 to 100, split into four tiers:

Tier Scales Name
T1 1–25 Initiate
T2 26–50 Adept
T3 51–75 Expert
T4 76–100 Master

Your personal fractal level rises by one every time you clear a fractal at or above your current level, and you cannot enter above your own level. The game opens the scales gradually.

Your character level does not matter: you are scaled to 80 on entry.

The map of all 100 levels

The ladder splits into four tiers, and each tier is a different game.

  • Tier 1, Initiate: levels 0 to 25
  • Tier 2, Adept: levels 26 to 50
  • Tier 3, Expert: levels 51 to 75
  • Tier 4, Master: levels 76 to 100

Underneath them sit 29 distinct fractals: Snowblind, Swampland, Cliffside, Thaumanova Reactor, Sunqua Peak, Silent Surf, Lonely Tower and the rest — the newest, Solitary Throne, arrived in September 2026 with the Code of Creation finale. Each is a self-contained twenty-minute location with its own art, its own boss and its own idea, and several of them are better designed than content the game charged money for.

Most players see maybe eight of the twenty-nine, because they stop at Tier 1 and the rotation never reaches the rest.

Agony is the thing to understand.

From scale 20 the game applies Agony, a separate damage type that ignores your armour. It removes 10% of your maximum health per tick and climbs with the scale, up to 180%.

Only one thing counters it: Agony Resistance. That is a property of infusions, and infusions go into ascended gear, which is why fractals drag ascended along behind them. Enough resistance drops the damage to 1% per tick.

So the chain is: you want past scale 20 → you need infusions → you need items with infusion slots → you need ascended. This is the only reason most players ever need ascended at all (what else changes at 80).

Agony, and the gear tax nobody calls a gear tax

The recommended agony resistance climbs from 0 at the bottom to 150 at level 100. Level 20 wants 8. Level 50 wants 61.

Look at the shape of that curve. The first quarter of the ladder asks almost nothing. The middle asks for a real investment in infusions. The last quarter asks for a full ascended set with infusion slots filled, which is weeks of work or a serious amount of gold on the market.

Agony is presented as a hazard of the Mists. In practice it is a paywall made of playtime, and it exists to stop level 2 characters walking into level 90 rewards.

Knowing that changes how it feels. Being stopped by a wall of damage you cannot out-skill is demoralising if you think it is a test of ability. It is a checklist item, and the answer is on your gear panel rather than in your hands.

17 Mistlock Instabilities rotate through the higher tiers, adding a modifier per day, and the daily fractals run on a 15-day rotation. Both of those exist to keep the same 29 rooms from becoming furniture, and after a few hundred runs you will have opinions about every one of them.

What a newcomer should do

Do not assemble ascended in advance. There is no agony below scale 20, so the first twenty levels are comfortable in exotic. Find out whether the format suits you first.

Start in T1 and take your time. Every fractal has its own mechanics, and the place to learn them is where a mistake does not cost the group a run.

Collect Fractal Relics. A clear pays between 5 and 19 relics depending on the scale. They are spent with vendors in the Mistlock Observatory, which is also where your first infusions and gear come from.

Do the dailies. Three fractals rotate each day on a 15-day cycle, and they pay chests with relics, agony infusions and potions. Early on that is the main engine of progress.

Why they are worth the time

A fractal runs 10 to 20 minutes. Not an hour like a raid, and not “assemble ten people and agree on an evening”. You log in, do three dailies, log out.

The rewards are solid and the mechanics are real: this is where you first meet fights that ask for more than damage. If the open world has started to feel soft but raids look intimidating, this is the step in between.

What not to do

Do not jump to T4. Even if a group takes you, without agony resistance you melt and they waste a run.

Do not buy infusions ahead of time. The resistance you need depends on the scale, and each has a specific number. Decide where you are going, then buy for it.

Do not write off exotic. It carries you to scale 20, which is a quarter of all fractal content.

Questions people ask

What are fractals in Guild Wars 2?

Short five-player dungeons with 100 difficulty scales, entered through the asura gate at Fort Marriner in Lion's Arch. A run takes 10 to 20 minutes.

When do I need Agony Resistance?

From scale 20 upward. Agony ignores armour and removes 10% of your maximum health per tick, and only Agony Resistance from infusions reduces it.

Do I need ascended gear to start fractals?

No. Everything below scale 20 is comfortable in exotic, which is a quarter of the fractal content. Collect ascended once you decide you like the format.

What do fractals reward?

Fractal Relics, spent in the Mistlock Observatory, plus daily chests with infusions and potions. They are the standard path to your first ascended pieces.
