Legendary weapons: what they are for and where to start

The stats match ascended exactly. The point is elsewhere: free stat swapping, one copy shared across every character, and skins that cost nothing to change. Plus what the materials cost at this hour.

The first thing to settle: a legendary does not make you stronger. Its stats are identical to an ascended weapon you could craft in a week.

People spend months on them for the convenience instead. Worth knowing which convenience.

What a legendary buys you

Free stat swapping. An ascended piece is locked to one attribute set: built for one role, it stays that way. A legendary re-rolls its stats as often as you like, at no cost.

Free sigil swapping. Same idea, for the inserts.

One copy, every character. Through the Legendary Armory a single legendary is available to all your characters at once. Not passed around, available simultaneously. For anyone playing several characters this is the heaviest argument on the list.

Skins without Transmutation Charges. Appearance changes cost nothing.

So a legendary is not a weapon, it is release from bookkeeping. One character in one build does not need it. Five characters and a habit of rebuilding, and it pays for itself.

Three generations

Generation 1 shipped with the base game, each weapon type with its own look.

Generation 2 arrived with Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire, also with unique models.

Generation 3 came with End of Dragons as themed collections, with extra skin sets in the style of each Elder Dragon.

Start with generation 1. It has existed since launch, the market around it has settled, and the route is known. Later generations want more work inside their expansions.

The three generations, counted.

Generation 1 arrived with the game in 2012: 19 weapons, each with a bespoke visual design, one for every basic weapon type.

Generation 2 came out one at a time across the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire years: 16 weapons, also individually designed.

Generation 3 shipped with End of Dragons and works differently: 16 base weapons, plus six unlockable skin variants each, themed after the Elder Dragons. Same weapon, six looks, unlocked over time.

A first-generation legendary is assembled from four components, and the shape is the same for every one of the nineteen: the precursor, the weapon-specific gift, the Gift of Fortune and the Gift of Mastery. Frostfang, for instance, wants Tooth of Frostfang, Gift of Frostfang, Gift of Fortune and Gift of Mastery. Learn that skeleton once and every generation-1 recipe becomes readable.

What the recipe is made of

Four things go into the Mystic Forge:

  1. A precursor, either bought on the Trading Post or built through a collection
  2. Gift of the Legendary Weapon, specific to each weapon
  3. Gift of Fortune, which swallows Mystic Clovers and piles of materials
  4. Gift of Mastery, holding map completion, Gift of Battle from WvW and Obsidian Shards

The precursor is usually the largest single line and the one that scares people off. It is also the only one with a visible price tag on the Trading Post, which makes planning easy.

What the materials cost

Current prices for the things a legendary eats in bulk are below. Live numbers, updated on their own.

A few notes that save money.

Mystic Coin works as currency at the top of the market. They arrive through daily rewards and every legendary wants a lot of them. If a legendary has crossed your mind at all, start putting them aside now, before you have even chosen the weapon.

Glob of Ectoplasm is the same story in larger quantities.

Tier 6 materials (Vial of Powerful Blood, Ancient Bone, Elaborate Totem, Powerful Venom Sac, Armored Scale, Pile of Crystalline Dust) are bought by the stack. Their prices move together, and buying gradually beats buying all at once: a sudden order lifts the price under itself.

Mystic Clovers and Obsidian Shards are not sold on the Trading Post. No amount of gold shortcuts them, only the Mystic Forge and karma. When you budget, remember that part of the road cannot be paid past.

Which generation to start with, and why it is not the pretty one

Newcomers pick by looks, which is reasonable and usually wrong for a first attempt.

Generation 3 is the gentler entry. The collections are structured, the steps tell you what they want, and the six skin variants mean one project keeps paying out visually long after the weapon is finished.

Generation 1 is the cheapest to plan around, because it is fourteen years old and every material in it has a deep, liquid market. Check any of them against the market and the price is real rather than theoretical.

Generation 2 is the one to avoid first. The collections are long, some steps are gated behind expansion content you may not own, and nothing about the process teaches you anything you did not already learn from the other two.

And the piece of advice that matters more than the choice: start collecting before you decide. Mystic Clovers, Mystic Coins, Obsidian Shards and ectoplasm are wanted by every legendary in the game. Nothing you bank is wasted, whichever weapon you land on, and the players who finish quickly are almost never the ones who worked efficiently. They are the ones who started early and stopped selling their coins.

Honest advice for a new player

Do not start a legendary early. It gives you nothing that a few gold of exotic does not, and it eats months.

But start hoarding. Do not spend Mystic Coins and ectoplasm on small things. They will matter when you are ready to decide, and this is the rare case where working ahead pays.

Sort out the basics first. A full exotic set, then ascended for fractals, then a legendary. That order is not about difficulty; each step only makes sense once the one before it is done (what to do at 80).

What the last click feels like

Since this article is mostly a shopping list, it is worth saying what waits at the end of it.

A legendary is built out of months of small deposits. Twenty coins here. A stack of blood you did not spend. A gift you finished in February and left in the bank because three others were missing. For most of that time nothing visibly happens, and you forget you are doing it.

Then one evening the last piece arrives, and you stand in front of the forge with four items and a button.

People expect fireworks. What most of them report is something quieter and better: the weapon appears, it glows, you look at it for a while, and the overwhelming feeling is that you can stop counting now. No more checking whether you have enough. No more leaving stacks untouched. The project that has been sitting in the corner of your inventory for half a year is closed.

That is the real reward, and it explains why the stat sheet is beside the point. You did not spend six months for a weapon. You spent six months to reach an evening where a long thing you started is finished, which is rarer in life than it should be.

Questions people ask

Does legendary gear have better stats?

No. Stats are identical to ascended. What you get is free stat changes, free sigil swaps, free skin changes and shared access across every character through the Legendary Armory.

How long does a legendary weapon take?

Months for most players. The precursor is usually the largest single cost, and Mystic Clovers and Obsidian Shards cannot be bought on the trading post at any price.

Which legendary should I make first?

A first-generation weapon. It has existed since launch, the market around it is settled, and the path is predictable compared to later generations.

What should I start saving now?

Mystic Coins and Globs of Ectoplasm. Both go into every legendary in quantity, and coins arrive from daily rewards whether you plan for them or not.
