Roller Beetle: the fastest mount, and it costs no gold

The beetle costs nothing at all, only three collections back to back. Which episode you need, who to talk to in the Domain of Kourna, and why it outruns everything on flat ground.

The Roller Beetle is the rare case of a mount with no price. No gold, no currency, no gems. Only the time three collections take.

In exchange it is the fastest thing in the game on level ground. The beetle winds up gradually and on a straight run it outpaces everything, a diving griffon included. On broken terrain and uphill it is useless.

It is also the mount the races are run on, a whole activity with its own tracks.

What you need

Living World Season 4, episode 3, “Long Live the Lich”. Season 4 episodes unlock free if you logged in while they were current; otherwise they cost gems.

Path of Fire is also required, since Season 4 does not start without it.

Where it begins

During the third chapter of the episode, “Tactical Triage”, speak to Spearmarshal Zaeim in the Domain of Kourna.

Then find Gorrik at the Allied Encampment. He starts the High Roller achievement, and the beetle story with it.

Two more names turn up along the way: Blish and Petey. Petey is the beetle, and part of the collection is about getting him to tolerate you.

Three collections in sequence

Each one opens the next:

  1. Beetle Juice, 10 items
  2. Beetle Saddle, 9 items
  3. Beetle Feed, 8 items

Twenty-seven entries in total, and they vary: kill a particular enemy, buy an item from a vendor for Inscribed Shards, join a meta event, bring down a world boss.

They are not confined to Kourna either. Some sit in central Tyria, some across the Crystal Desert maps. One map will not cover it, so expect travel.

No time gates. That is the difference from the long Skyscale route, where daily resets stop you regardless of effort. Here the only limit is your own evening.

How long it takes

One or two sessions if you go at it directly. The cost is legwork rather than difficulty: 27 entries spread over several maps.

The entries tied to metas and world bosses usually take longest, since those run on a timetable you have to meet.

What the beetle can do

The unlock guides end at the third collection, which is why so many players ride a beetle for a year using two buttons.

Roll Out is the engage skill: you roll forward and damage anything you pass through. Boost accelerates hard for several seconds and takes most of your turning with it. Drift is the one that separates people who look good from people who look sideways. Held at speed, it cuts friction and lets you turn while still moving fast.

Three more skills are on the bar, and here is the part worth saying out loud: they are on every mount you own. Bond of Vigor boosts endurance regeneration on a 60-second recharge, Bond of Faith launches you off the mount on 30 seconds, and Bond of Life lends the mount your health pool at the risk of going down in its place, on 180. Most players never bind them. If you take one thing from this article, make it that.

The numbers under the speed

Base speed is 600 units per second. Boost takes it to 1,800, three times normal, and a rider who chains drift and terrain properly can push toward 2,500.

For comparison, that top figure is the fastest sustained movement available to a player character in the game. There is a reason the beetle got its own racing circuit rather than just a mount slot.

The mastery track

Three tiers, 1,879,600 experience in total, paying 12 mastery points along the way (how masteries work).

  • Wrecking Ball, 571,500 XP, 3 points. Roll Out now launches foes.
  • Barrier Smash, 609,600 XP, 4 points. You break into secret areas and volatile crystals.
  • Big Air, 698,500 XP, 5 points. Airborne tricks give endurance back.

🔴 Barrier Smash is the sleeper. It turns the beetle from a vehicle into a key: cracked walls scattered across Path of Fire and Season 4 maps open only to something moving that fast, and behind several of them sit chests people have walked past for years.

Who should bother

If you cover a lot of open world it earns its place. On long straight stretches the time saved is obvious.

If races appeal to you there is no alternative, this is the only mount for them.

If you do not yet own a Springer and a Skimmer, get those first. They are cheap, they give you height and water, and the beetle only adds speed on ground you could already cross.

The full picture across all nine sits in the table.

Questions people ask

Does the roller beetle cost gold?

None at all. It asks only for time: three collections in a row, Beetle Juice, Beetle Saddle and Beetle Feed, adding up to 27 items.

What do I need to unlock the beetle?

Path of Fire plus Living World Season 4 episode 3, Long Live the Lich. It starts with Spearmarshal Zaeim in Domain of Kourna.

Are there time gates on the beetle?

No daily resets. The only waiting comes from collection steps tied to metas and world bosses, which run on their own schedules.

Is the beetle the fastest mount in the game?

On flat ground, yes, faster than anything else including a diving griffon. On slopes and rough terrain it is helpless.
