Roller Beetle: the fastest mount in the game, and it asks for no gold
The beetle costs nothing at all, only three collections back to back. Which episode you need, who to talk to in the Domain of Kourna, and why it outruns everything on flat ground.

The Roller Beetle is the rare case of a mount with no price. No gold, no currency, no gems. Only the time three collections take.
In exchange it is the fastest thing in the game on level ground. The beetle winds up gradually and on a straight run it outpaces everything, a diving griffon included. On broken terrain and uphill it is useless.
It is also the mount the races are run on, a whole activity with its own tracks.
What you need
Living World Season 4, episode 3, “Long Live the Lich”. Season 4 episodes unlock free if you logged in while they were current; otherwise they cost gems.
Path of Fire is also required, since Season 4 does not start without it.
Where it begins
During the third chapter of the episode, “Tactical Triage”, speak to Spearmarshal Zaeim in the Domain of Kourna.
Then find Gorrik at the Allied Encampment. He starts the High Roller achievement, and the beetle story with it.
Two more names turn up along the way: Blish and Petey. Petey is the beetle, and part of the collection is about getting him to tolerate you.
Three collections in sequence
Each one opens the next:
- Beetle Juice, 10 items
- Beetle Saddle, 9 items
- Beetle Feed, 8 items
Twenty-seven entries in total, and they vary: kill a particular enemy, buy an item from a vendor for Inscribed Shards, join a meta event, bring down a world boss.
They are not confined to Kourna either. Some sit in central Tyria, some across the Crystal Desert maps. One map will not cover it, so expect travel.
No time gates. That is the difference from the long Skyscale route, where daily resets stop you regardless of effort. Here the only limit is your own evening.
How long it takes
One or two sessions if you go at it directly. The cost is legwork rather than difficulty: 27 entries spread over several maps.
The entries tied to metas and world bosses usually take longest, since those run on a timetable you have to meet.
Who should bother
If you cover a lot of open world it earns its place. On long straight stretches the time saved is obvious.
If races appeal to you there is no alternative, this is the only mount for them.
If you do not yet own a Springer and a Skimmer, get those first. They are cheap, they give you height and water, and the beetle only adds speed on ground you could already cross.
